July 28 is World Hepatitis Day.
Almost 4 crore Indians suffer from hepatitis and the government hardly has any plans to tackle a disease this severe. Lack of awareness programmes and a lack of infrastructure for proper diagnosis of the disease are a few reasons the disease is rampant in India. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver mostly caused by a virus. The disease, although dangerous, can be prevented with vaccination and following a few sanitation rules. Vaccination: It is the best way to provide immunity against the disease.

- You can safeguard yourself against Hepatitis A by vaccination. Not only children, but even adults can be vaccinated against hepatitis A.
- Similarly, hepatitis B vaccines are also available and both children and adults who have not been vaccinated before the age of 18 should be vaccinated against the disease. Hepatitis B vaccine offers long-term protection. Vaccines for hepatitis C is under development and currently not available. Read in detail about vaccines for hepatitis.
- Do not share toothbrushes, razors and needles.
- Wash hands with soap after visiting the toilet.
- Wash hands before and after eating and cooking food.
- Do not eat contaminated food.
- Drink clean and boiled water.
- Avoid sex with an infected person and practise safe sex.
