Keep hepatitis at bay with these tips

July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. Almost 4 crore Indians suffer from hepatitis and the government hardly has any plans to tackle a disease this severe. Lack of awareness programmes and a lack of infrastructure for proper diagnosis of the disease are a few reasons the disease is rampant in India. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver mostly caused by a virus. The disease, although dangerous, can be prevented with vaccination and following a few sanitation rules. Read about the 6 challenges to hepatitis prevention in India. Prevention tips: Vaccination: It is the best way to provide immunity against the disease.
  1. You can safeguard yourself against Hepatitis A by vaccination. Not only children, but even adults can be vaccinated against hepatitis A.
  2. Similarly, hepatitis B vaccines are also available and both children and adults who have not been vaccinated before the age of 18 should be vaccinated against the disease. Hepatitis B vaccine offers long-term protection. Vaccines for hepatitis C is under development and currently not available. Read in detail about vaccines for hepatitis. 
Practising good hygiene: The easiest yet effective way to protect yourself from hepatitis is following a few hygiene rules.
  1. Do not share toothbrushes, razors and needles.
  2. Wash hands with soap after visiting the toilet.
  3. Wash hands before and after eating and cooking food.
  4.  Do not eat contaminated food.
  5.  Drink clean and boiled water.
  6.  Avoid sex with an infected person and practise safe sex.
